Daily Living with FND
Living with Functional Neurological Disorder affects everyday routines, decisions, and energy in ways that are not always visible to others. Daily living with FND often involves navigating fluctuating symptoms, pacing, cognitive and physical fatigue, and changing capacity while trying to maintain a sense of stability in ordinary life.
This section of the Learning and Support Library brings together practical resources focused on everyday functioning. The goal is not to fix symptoms, but to support steadiness, clarity, and realistic expectations in daily life.
Understanding Flare-Ups and Nervous System Response
Functional Neurological Disorder symptoms can change in intensity from day to day and sometimes come in “flare-ups.” During a flare-up, some people notice more sensitivity to stress, sensory input, physical effort, or strong emotions. Other flare-ups may not have a clear trigger.
Research and clinical guidance on FND highlight that stress, emotional escalation, and intense struggle against symptoms can increase nervous system arousal. For many people, this can make symptoms feel more intense or last longer during a flare-up.
Rather than trying to power through with force, strategies that encourage regulation, pacing, and calm responses can help reduce escalation and support stabilization. FND is not a problem of willpower. These strategies are intended to support a calmer response to changing symptoms, whatever the trigger.
